Izki Natural Park: wild nature to explore

If you are a lover of nature in its purest form, the Izki Natural Park is a gem that you cannot miss. Located in Álava, just a 25-minute drive from Camping Acedo, this protected area offers unique landscapes, trails for all levels, and biodiversity that makes it the perfect destination for a day trip.

A unique and well-preserved environment

With more than 9,000 hectares, Izki is the third largest natural park in the Basque Country. Its most characteristic feature is the extensive oak forest of Quercus pyrenaica, popularly known as melojos, a species rarely found in the north of the peninsula. These lush forests, combined with rivers, ravines and plains, create a landscape that changes throughout the seasons.

Izki's natural wealth is not limited to its vegetation. Birds of prey such as golden eagles, Egyptian vultures and common buzzards are a common sight in its skies. It is also a prime location for observing the middle spotted woodpecker, a rare species of woodpecker. Its terrestrial fauna includes roe deer, wild boar and small mammals that inhabit the tranquillity of the forest.

Routes for all levels

Izki has an extensive network of well-marked trails, making it an ideal destination for both experienced hikers and families with children.

  • Short routes: perfect for a one- or two-hour walk, enjoying the forest and the tranquillity of the surroundings.
  • Long journeys: ideal for those seeking to delve into the heart of the park and discover its wildest corners.
  • MTB and cycle touring: the park has mountain bike trails and tracks with varying degrees of difficulty.

At the Korres Interpretation Centre, you can obtain maps, information about the routes, and tips on how to make the most of your visit.

Other attractions in the park

In addition to its trails, Izki Natural Park hides some charming spots:

  • Korres, the only inhabited centre within the park, is a small, picturesque village with cobbled streets and traditional houses.
  • Izki river, which gives the park its name, runs through several of its valleys and forms perfect spots to rest and enjoy the sound of the water.
  • Natural viewpoints, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the forests and mountains.

Durante el otoño, el parque se tiñe de tonos ocres, dorados y rojizos, convirtiéndose en un lugar mágico para los amantes de la fotografía.

Ideal for a getaway from the campsite

Visiting Izki from Camping Acedo is very easy: in less than an hour you can be surrounded by wild nature and fresh air. It's a perfect plan for spending the day walking or cycling, and then returning to the campsite to take a dip in the pool, relax in your bungalow or have dinner in the bar-restaurant.

If you are looking to unwind, breathe in tranquillity and discover one of the most impressive landscapes in the Basque Country, Izki Natural Park awaits you with its forests, wildlife and unique atmosphere.
