If you love hiking, mountains and breathtaking landscapes, make a note of this name: Monte Ioar. At 1,418 metres above sea level, it is the highest peak in the Sierra de Codés, an imposing mountain range that separates Navarre and Álava. Its summit not only offers spectacular views of the surrounding area, but also an experience of total connection with nature. And best of all, it is very close to Camping Acedo.
Where is Mount Ioar?
Mount Ioar is located on the border between Navarre and Álava, within the Sierra de Codés Natural Park. From Camping Acedo, you can easily reach the Codés Sanctuary by car, which is the most common starting point for the route. This sanctuary, surrounded by forest, is worth a visit in its own right, both for its historical value and its privileged location.
Which route to take?
One of the most popular routes up Mount Ioar is the one that starts at the Codés Sanctuary. It is a circular route of about 10 kilometres, with an elevation gain of approximately 800 metres, making it a demanding but accessible hike for people of average fitness who are used to walking in the mountains.
The trail begins among beech and oak trees, passing through a lush forest that offers shade and coolness, ideal especially on sunny days. Little by little, the path gains altitude and the views open up towards the Aguilar valley, the Urbasa mountain range and, if the day is clear, even the Pyrenees.
Near the summit, the landscape becomes rockier and panoramic views appear. The effort is worth it: from the top of Ioar, you can see much of Navarre, La Rioja Alavesa and Álava. It is the perfect place to take a long break, take photos and breathe in the fresh air.
An excursion for any time of year
Although this route can be done all year round, autumn and spring are particularly recommended. The changing colours of the forest in autumn are spectacular, and in spring everything is covered with flowers and intense greens. In summer, it is advisable to get up early to avoid the heat, and in winter there may be snow at the top, which adds a special touch (although it also requires more preparation).
What to bring?
As with any mountain excursion, it is advisable to bring:
- Suitable hiking footwear.
- Sufficient water (there are no water sources along the way).
- Some food or nuts to replenish your energy.
- Clothing suitable for the climate, with the option of a coat even in summer.
- Sun protection.
- The desire to enjoy oneself.
